Assignment 1 - Negative Space

Description

There are two parts to form, the Positive Space that it occupies and the Negative Space that is created by the left over space around the form. Another way of describing this is Figure and Ground, where figure represents the positive space and the ground represents the negative space.

Your Assignment

Your first assignment is to demonstrate that you understand the concept of positive and negative space. Using your 3 initials, experiment with emphasizing the negative space that is created by each letterform. The way to test your assignment is to look at it and ensure that the letter ends up looking like the background and the negative space created from that letter ends up looking like the figure.

Objective

Here are some options to further manipulate the font. We'll go over these options next time we meet in class.

Layer Options for Rasterizing a type layer or converting it to a vector shape layer:

Below you can see the three different type layers. The top layer is a vector shape layer that you can manipulate with the White Arrow tool and the Pen Tool. The second layer is a rasterize layer that can be manipulated as if it were just a collection of painted pixels. The bottom of the three type layers ("R) is the only one that is still editable (you can change font options).

By Right clicking on a type layer on the right empty portion of the of layer you will get the options below where you can select either Rasterize Type or Convert to Shape.
