Spring 2011 Course Overview

This is an introductory level course in Adobe Photoshop CS5 covers that basic creation and manipulation of digital imagery. Adobe Photoshop is the leading image editing software for digital photographers and graphics professionals. Students will learn the many sophisticated tools of Photoshop for adjusting and replacing colors, creating montage (combination) images, colorizing photos, repairing and restoring damaged photos, and creating special effects used in advertisements, posters, magazines, etc.

Basic knowledge of computers and the English language are required.

Examples of Design Topics Discussed

Image Manipulation, Creating Graphics (vector and raster), Typography, Montage, Printing, Photo Correction, Retouching, and Repairing, and much more.

Student Evaluation Process

Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the course material through a series of hands-on projects.

  • Choose the person you are going to do the portrait of and download/scan/photograph all photos necessary for you Midterm Project.
  • Read Lesson 4

Midterm 1

  • Create a montage portrait of someone you respect/admire. Your file should be 900 pixels by 600 Pixels. The resolution should be 72ppi and it should be in RGB Mode. You will turn in a PSD file- don't print it and preserve layers (don't flatten file).
  • You must use:
    • Layer Blending Modes
    • Opacity Settings
    • Masking
    • Adjustment Layers (use the masks and possibly clipping masks)
    • Smart object
    • Smart filter
    • between 6-9 different images
  • Your objective is to make the image as seamless as possible. You will be graded on the quality of your technique and not the subject matter. You should find high qualilty images online and you may scan images in as well during lab. However, note that the quality of imagery that you choose will effect your grade. Therefore don't use pixelated, low quality images.
  • You must also turn in the original image files along with your PSD file so that I can see your work.
  • You must use the naming convention/folder structure shown in class (deliverables, sketches, working, source)

Work in Progress dates for Midterm 1

  • Your work in progressis due Wednesday March 16, and the final version due on Monday April 4th.
  • ***Friday Class- your work in progress is due on March 18 and the final version is due on April 8.
